Iraq is a severely mine affected country, landmines kill and maim hundreds of innocent civilians every year. In Northern Iraq (Kurdistan) about one person a day steps on a landmine. Iraq also has the second largest oil reserve in the world. The Bush administration claims to be fighting this war in Iraq to liberate the Iraqi people yet, the energy security problem for America has been addressed again and again. The U.S. has become increasingly threatened by oil shortages. I felt it necessary to exhibit this dilemma of both landmines and Iraqi oil because each appear to be contributing to the others power. The more troops we send into Iraq the greater the threat of landmines become. The more territory that is conquered, the more land is ensured for oil companies. The infestation of landmines goes hand-and-hand with the infestation of oil reserves on that land. To prove this theory, Ive created my own anti-personnel self-deactivating landmines which when triggered release not explosives, but oil. My landmines are made entirely of wood and plastic because wood and plastic landmines are replacing metal casing landmines because they are harder to detect. Within each landmine, Ive built a system that will release oil from spouts along the tops of the landmines drenching the activator in oil from head to toe. A clear tube is also connected to a faucet fastener to allow the flow or the halting of oil into the landmine. I then installed these landmines at the sand dunes in Michigan to demonstrate their affects. I ran through the sand dune fields repeatedly until I activated one of the mines. I employed a person to videotape this process so that I would appear to be the innocent civilian.
