my shanty town shack
For this project, I decided to build my own shanty shack similar to those that were prevalent during the Great Depression. I then decided to live in my shack for a week without spending any money or using any technology. I was then forced to beg for food, use a bucket as a toilet, and sleep outside in the cold. I did this not to act as a true homeless person (for one can never truly know what it means to be homeless), but to separate myself from any distractions. I then spent the week reading and studying numerous replicated documents I received such as: The Bill of Rights, The Constitution, Thomas Jefferson’s Letters etc. After thoroughly studying and memorizing specific parts of a document I would then affix that document to the outside or inside of my shack. The documents then act as a sheltering device themselves, but will also deteriorate in time. They then act as reminders that our Country was founded on these grandiose ideas for the common man in this land of opportunity and yet this terrible poverty still exists.
