For this project, I wanted to comment on the absurdity of American competitiveness through activating standard American household appliances. I created a system that will allow my personal belongings to compete for my attention. I selected three of my belongings that I feel best define the common American. My three selected items are: my computer, television, and toaster. I then set up a number of disposable video cameras in my apartment to document my interactions with my appliances. The video cameras are only activated when I am interacting with one of the three appliances. For instance, if I am on the computer for an extended period of time my television will turn itself on, flip through the channels, switch its volume all the way up and send a signal to my computer to succeed in kicking me offline. My computer will then retaliate by causing my television screen to lose reception and turn off. My toaster will then become activated and begin popping toast up and down repeatedly until I give it my utmost attention. The interactions of my objects will then depend greatly on which object I choose to engage with first. The competition has no end.
